Adults Who Consume Fluoride In Drinking Water At Decreased Risk For Tooth Decay

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Adelaide, Australia, has produced the strongest evidence yet that fluoride in drinking water provides dental health benefits to adults, even those who had not received fluoridated drinking water as children.

In the first population-level study of its kind, the study shows that fluoridated drinking water prevents tooth decay for all adults regardless of age, and whether or not they consumed fluoridated water during childhood.

U.S. Water Infrastructure Given "D" Grade by ASCE Group

The U.S. drinking water and sewage infrastructure earned a barely passing grade of D from the American Society of Civil Engineers today, which said at least $1 trillion is needed to fix the problem.

The ASCE in its quadrennial Report Card for America's Infrastructure said the drinking water infrastructure improved slightly, to a D from an almost failing D- in 2009, even as U.S. pipes and treatment plants near the end of their expected lifespan. With almost 240,000 water main breaks a year, it would take more than $1 trillion to repair and replace systems, the report said, citing the American Water Works Association.

Federal Water Tap, March 25: Twenty Percent of U.S. River-Miles Are Healthy, EPA Says

Only one of every five miles of river in the United States is ecologically and biologically healthy, according to a first-of-its-kind assessment of national water quality. The Environmental Protection Agency used random sampling to estimate river and stream health in the lower 48 states. Based on data from 1,924 sites monitoring rivers, streams and ponds, the EPA found that phosphorous and nitrogen are the most common pollutants. Public comments are due by May 9 and should be sent to nrsa-hq@epa.gov.

Tips & Tricks

» On your Student Page, you can see what courses you have taken and to which license it was assigned by clicking the "My Transcript" menu item (and view or print your Certificates of Completion), view or print the invoices for reimbursement in the My Invoices of the "My Account" menu item, and even review the text of the courses you have already completed under My Course History on the "Start Course" page.

» Some Operators like to print out the Course Section Text to read away from the computer screen (or to keep a three-ring binder with the archived Course Text for easy reference). An easy way to print the Course Text is to (once the Course Text window is open) hold the "Ctrl" key and press the "P". This brings up the print window from which you can print the text.

As spring approaches with all of its promises of renewal, we take a moment to reflect on where we've been and where we are going.
Thank you for being a part of the CEU Plan family.
Happy Easter,
Bill Edgar, Program Administrator
