Holiday Greetings

Dr. Ken Kerri
It is a pleasure and honor to publish this nice holiday greetings from the "Founder of Correspondence Courses for Water and Wastewater."

I'd like to thank Bill for inviting me to write this HOLIDAY GREETINGS.

During this time of the year we reflect with thanks and appreciation for our colleagues who have heroically responded, repaired and recovered from the impacts and devastation caused by disasters, including storms, floods, fires and earthquakes.

We admire and appreciate the advances in science and technology that help improve the performance of our facilities and our personal accomplishments.

We continue to strive to fulfill the expectations of society when we improve and enhance the:

  1. Public health,
  2. Environment (including people, fisheries, water fowl and wildlife), and
  3. Quality of life in our homes, communities, regions and the world.

We are grateful for our colleagues, neighbors and friends for the opportunities to network and know that we can always count on them in times of need.

Let's look forward to next year and the opportunities for fellowship, to share our experiences and to enjoy the good times together.

Ken Kerri

Instructor Spotlight

Russ Martin

Russell Martin is a well known figure in the wastewater treatment industry. He has worked for the US EPA for more than 40 years troubleshooting plants that don't work well and helping to enhance their performance. Auspiciously, he also spends a great deal of time sharing the lessons he has learned through his many presentations. CEU Plan is fortunate that he shares this knowlege with us.

In this short video clip, Russ introduces his 2-hour "Clarifier Operations" course. In this two hour streaming course, Russ discusses the operation and performance of primary and secondary clarifiers including the evaluation of capacities, testing, and sensory evaluations which can be used to evaluate clarifier operations utilizing onsite experiences in troubleshooting.

His courses includes:

  • Clarifier Operations - 2 hour streaming video course
  • Reasonable Security Measures to Protect Your Plant - 2 hour streaming video course

Water and Wastewater Treatment in the News

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a total of $1.2 million in competitive grants awarded to 50 non-profit and tribal organizations working to address environmental justice issues nationwide. The grants enable non-profit organizations to conduct research, provide education, and develop solutions to local health and environmental issues in low-income communities overburdened by harmful pollution.

Issues such as climate change and variability, recurrent drought, and declining infrastructure also put water supplies under duress around the world. Moreover, with the advent of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) designed to profit from water scarcity, new market forces are being introduced that may have undesirable outcomes. In short, water many not only serve as the basis of religion, but also as the underpinning of the greatest global security threat.

Florida's springs are places of visual magic, as two paddlers discovered recently at Rainbow Springs in Marion County. The water there was so clear, their kayaks on the spring's surface appeared suspended in air, casting distinct shadows on the sandy bottom 10 feet below.
But that illusion hides a dirty truth: Rainbow Springs' water is far from pristine. The biggest illusion, riled-up environmentalists say, is that the state of Florida is doing enough to protect its unique array of springs.

Ohio EPA's operator certification program is improving its process to provide examinations more often and in more locations. We are investigating the ability to provide computer-based testing. Currently, we provide written testing to approximately 2,400 operators in 12 classifications of water and wastewater each year. The exams are given twice a year (spring and fall) in Columbus.

EPA's New Website and App

Check Out EPA's New Website and App - How's My Waterway?

As water and wastewater professionals we spend a majority of our hours each day protecting the environment and making sure our waterways are healthy. But even so, many of our country's waterways are still impaired.

Now the U.S. EPA has a website and app for your smart phone that provides quick and easy-to-read information on surface waters for both the general public and water industry experts. How's My Waterway will tell you if a stream has been analyzed, whether it is polluted and with what, and what is being done to alleviate the problem - all in plain language. If you have the app on your smart phone, you can view the information while you are standing right next to the stream by clicking "Use My Location." Or you can just type in the zip code or City and State and the program brings up every waterway within 5 miles.

Tips & Tricks

» People sometimes ask me, "Why doesn't CEU Plan have a Technical Support phone number?"
Well, there are a couple reasons for this. First, sometimes it takes a while to research a problem and determine a solution. The Tech Support person may have to review the CEU Plan servers operation or go into your Student Page to research a specific problem. If your question has to do with billing or exchanging enrolled courses or license numbers, the Tech Support person may have to contact a different department to get resolution. We don't want you to sit on hold while we do this.
Second, we need to have a paper trail for any Tech Support question you might have detailing everything from the initial inquiry through the final resolution, including all notes and findings from anyone who touched the case. This is an ANSI/IACET requirement and our record-keeping is one of the reasons that our program is so popular with the State OCPs.

» All of our courses are broken into one-hour segments. There are three sections per hour. These sections are comprised of 15 minutes for text review and 5 minutes to complete the small quiz. Now, we realize that different people read at different rates and that often people complete the section in less than the allotted 15 minutes. We also know that someone that has a familiarity with the course subject matter will gain a level of comprehension much faster. Realize, however, that the state requires that you spend a certain amount of time reviewing the material if you are to receive continuing education credit for doing so. Slow down and read the course section text before proceeding to the section quiz. The section quiz will only become available when the course text has been reviewed in accordance with the ANSI/IACET Standards governing CEU Plan Courses.

'Twas the night before Christmas
when all though the plant
blowers were hummin'
aeration tanks were bubbin'
headworks grittin'
tanks a settlin'
operators a workin'
no breaks...no rest,
vacation what?
to protect our people and Clean Water...

As another year draws to a close, everyone at CEU Plan wants to express our gratitude for you and your plant operations. We're looking forward to the new year and have some exciting things in the works.

Thank you again for being a student @ CEU Plan. We value your business and will continue to try and exceed your expectations wherever possible. Have a wonderful holiday season, and we'll see you next year!

Sincerely,
Bill Edgar, Program Administrator
