Our Ethics Affect Lives
Mary L. Howell

If you think about it, our moral compass is set before we ever enter the workplace. However, life and workplace experiences can affect how our ethics take shape. The ethics of the people above us invariably trickle down. The behavior of the person in the "top box" will set the stage. Are you directed to take shortcuts which could cost lives? Our ethics are reflected in the standards we set and the decisions we make.

Water-Wastewater Ethics
Donna Kaluzniak

When most people think about water and wastewater, they focus more on the technical side of the business. But ethics is an important factor for all water professionals.

Operators are well trained to know and understand the importance of proper sampling, testing, monitoring and reporting. But some may be pressured by unethical managers or utility owners to falsify results or omit reports of overflow to avoid regulatory fines. Operators may be "discouraged" from reporting equipment breakdowns in order to avoid the cost of replacing equipment.

Academic Ethics

Lately, much has been said about "Journalistic Accuracy". On the evening news, a veteran war correspondent recently recanted and issued apologies for embellishing one of his stories. And this is not an isolated event. In fact, inaccuracy in news reporting is becoming a news story itself. CEU Plan is also bound by "Academic Ethics". Every course enrollment is a contract between CEU Plan and the individual student. The student is bound to adhere to our policies and we are bound to provide correct and accurate course content approved by their specific State OCP for the renewal of their specific license type and to report their course completions to the relevant OCP for their credit.

Earlier this year at the ABC Conference, Mary Howell made an excellent presentation on ethics and a discussion of the "Moral Compass." I asked Mary, earlier this month, if we could share her presentation with you as an introduction to an "Instructor Highlight" on ethics. Thanks, Mary!

Ethics reaches deep into our CEU Plan wishing well. We believe that it is very important to be ethically correct, to proofread everything to make sure we are not misleading anyone, to work closely with your state agency to meet the rules and regulations, and most importantly, to support you in your training, increasing the skill sets that are important to you. Here's an example of our ethics: Donna Kaluzniak, an instructor with CEU Plan for many years, is listed above …. However we have been using her maiden name, in that her City Manager (boss) did not want Donna to create any "conflict of interest" through authoring her training courses. Annette Vail has been her pen name for many years -- a secret to all, other than Donna, her City Manager, and top CEU management. Now Donna has retired and "comes out of the closet" to establish her true identity. Donna has a world of experience and we are much honored to have her courses in our library for you. A little more about Donna:

Donna Kaluzniak is a Certified Environmental Professional with over 30 years experience in water and wastewater utilities. She recently retired as the Utility Director for a small municipality, and holds Florida Class A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Class C Collection Systems Field Technician, and Level II Environmental Analyst licenses. She has a Master of Public Administration degree from University of North Florida, has a part-time environmental writing business (www.logicalecology.net) and is the publisher of the website www.TreatmentPlantSafety.com. Donna has served on the State of Florida Operator Certification Program - Exam Committee for many years. Volunteered during many disasters, to assist utility operations in the clean-up and restoration of the treatment plants into normal operations, such as Hurricane Katrina.

She has been a CEU Plan instructor for many years (see her article "Water-Wastewater Ethics" in this newsletter) and has authored many great courses including:

Tips & Tricks

» CEU Plan employs highly secure software which prevents anyone from entering a Student Page unless they insert the correct login – username and password. This security software is the same as is utilized by major military and governmental agencies to prevent hackers from gaining access to a Student Page. Basically, should anyone make multiple attempts to login with the incorrect username and password, the system will lock the page! The student must submit a technical support inquiry – "I Need Help" – form in order for us to investigate and unlock the Student Page. It is important to proofread all entries to prevent this from happening and always check to make sure that the caps lock is not on. This protection is very important.

» Here we grow again! CEU Plan instructors have been diligently writing new courses to enhance our catalog. Be on the lookout for new titles throughout the spring and summer.

During this Memorial Day season, we pause to remember those who have died serving in the United States military.
